Body & Mind
The ageing of our population has resulted in an increase in the number of elderly people with cognitive impairment, and this will likely increase as the numbers of elderly people continues to grow. However, its likely that proper nutrition, including overall diet composition as well specific micronutrients can help stem this tide.
Correcting frank or marginal deficiencies in micronutrients may be an important first step. Several epidemiological studies have shown that low levels of certain micronutrients, such as vitamin A, various B vitamins, B1, B2, B6, B12, vitamin C, vitamin E and folic acid, are associated with cognitive impairment. As well low levels of some of these micronutrients, especially vitamin E, are also associated with poor memory performance in older people. | |
The consensus is that cognitive disorders may be the result of certain vitamin deficiences, and that there is some improvement with the use of supplementation. As well, several studies have shown that there seems to be a possibility of the therapeutic use of antioxidants and free radical scavengers (e.g., vitamin E, Gingko Biloba extract EGb 761, melatonin, flavonoids, and carotenoids) to reduce cognitive decline and perhaps even to prevent or slow down the progression of various dementias.
